Life on the Canal

Embroidery is a form of art by designing fabric with threads and other materials using one or more needles.  The Vietnamese people have a long tradition of fine arts passed on from generation to generation among the diverse ethic groups through out the country. Each group has its own culture and art and one such art is hand embroidery which is a traditional art that is still very popular today.

This elegant picture is a perfect example of such traditional art which was embroidered by hand and illustrating how the water and earth are interlaced to form this tranquil setting.  In this region, a boat is much needed as it is the only mode of transportation.  The Vietnamese people lived on the canals and rivers connected to the Mekong Delta, they depend on the water for fish as well as plant rice – two staple food sources.  The Mekong Delta is situated south of Vietnam.  It is a very prosperous region that produces almost half of the country’s agricultural products.  The region is rich with rice filed, orchards and river and canals.

Size of the frame is 17¾” x 23½”.

The embroidery is framed, covered with glass and lined with a linen liner and gold strip.  It is fully completed and ready to be displayed.  This embroidery picture is unbelievably neat, it looks like a painting but it is not.  Just imagine the creative skills of the Vietnamese.
