Embroidery is a form of art by designing fabric with threads and other materials using one or more needles. The Vietnamese people have a long tradition of fine arts passed on from generation to generation among the diverse ethic groups through out the country. Each group has its own culture and art and one such art is hand embroidery which is a traditional art that is still very popular today.
This elegant picture is a perfect example of such creative art which was embroidered by hand portraying the scene of a rice field, where a Vietnamese woman is fanning the rice paddy to remove any remaining straw after the harvest. This is a rather primitive method but it works very well for small quantity. Paddy is derived from a Malay word (padi) which is a grain of rice with its outer shell. The paddy must be dried after harvesting and the outer shell removed to get the rice grain. Paddy field is a flooded area where rice is grown. Vietnam is said to be the second largest rice exporter in the world.
Size of the frame is 17¾” x 23½”.
The embroidery is framed, covered with glass and lined with a linen liner and gold strip. It is fully completed and ready to be displayed. This embroidery picture is unbelievably neat, it looks like a painting but it is not. Just imagine the creative skills of the Vietnamese.
